Motionworks and HP

I was delighted to take part in a case study on how I use the HP Z840 workstation in my work. It’s been over 2 years since I switched from Mac and this machine has been very reliable. Learn more about the z840 here.

Just the sort of video I was looking for! Great to hear your change was worth it. How are you liking the ultrawide curved monitor?

Liking it, I use it in combination with two other monitors now.

I stumbled onto your old post about this from a few years ago. As a newer Cinema4D user, currently using a 2013 Macbook Pro. Apple hasn’t come out with anything recently to make we want to stay with them or shell out the huge price tag. So I’m looking elsewhere. It looks like HP sells the Z8 workstation now that’s comparable to the Z840. Remaining budget conscious, would you recommend buying the base model and upgrade it over time? I’d probably just upgrade the Processor and RAM here to start?

The base Z8 G4 comes in at $3,300 – SPECS:

    Intel® Xeon® Bronze 3104 Processor (1.7 GHz, 8.25 MB cache, 2133MHz, 6 core)
    HP Z8 G4 90 1125W Chassis 100V/15A
8 GB (1×8 GB) DDR4-2666 ECC Registered Memory (1 Processor)
    Operating System Load to SATA/SAS
    500 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.5″ HDD
    AMD FirePro™ W2100 (2 GB; 2 DisplayPort 1.2, PCIe) Graphics
    Base – 4 x USB 3.0 Type A
HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS) for Z
    9.5mm DVD-Writer 1st Optical Disc Drive
HP Z8 Standard Cooling Solution – 1 Processor
    3/3/3 year (material/labor/onsite) Warranty
    HP Z8 G4 1125W Country Kit

Hey Glenn, I’d get more RAM, at least 32GB, An NVIDIA GPU not AMD (the best you can afford) or 2 if you’re using something like Octane or Redshift and Solid State Drives.
