Andrew Kramer

In just a few short years Video Copilot has skyrocketed to become the dominant force in visual fx and motion graphics online, with it’s founder, Andrew Kramer, becoming an industry icon. In part 1 of this riveting interview Andrew discusses his fascinating journey from high school student to industry leader and what that has meant to Video Copilot and him personally.

In Part 2, Andrew reveals his thoughts on why Video Copilot is so popular, and how he and the company are perceived by the industry. Andrew also gives a behind the scenes peak into the  production of the wildly popular Action Essentials 2 HD stock footage, and hints on the future of Video Copilot.

I started a new carrier in digital film about year a ago. I enrolled at the Art Institute in Philadelphia. I heard about video co-pilot and it was just a new beginning for me. I love visual effects and digital film making and Andrew is like a hero to me. I learned so much from andrew tutorials because he does teach in a fun way, stuff I want to do and not boring bla, bla, bla tech stuff. I know Tech stuff it’s important, but for me, the best way to learn tech stuff is by doing fun stuff. Andrew you are an amazing inspiration.

I’ve been stealing from Andrew Kramer since I first learned about Video Co-Pilot! (Well, I have bought most of his products.) I loved what he said about not minding when people copy his stuff. I don’t have a personal style yet, and I certainly don’t have the creative skills to attempt any of my own personal stuff, but I am learning. Only folks in the business “know” when others have copied another person’s style. Clients don’t know, and they don’t care. Thanks John for doing this interview with Andrew. Thanks for all your tutorials, and especially for the “Business of Design” series. It’s given me the confidence to make a business out of doing what I love, even though I don’t have the chops…YET! By way, whenever someone asks me “how did I do that?”, I point them straight to Video Co-Pilot or MotionWorks.

    Cheers!

Hi Gwendolyn, I’m not so sure client’s wouldn’t know or care. Video Copilot looks are used heavily throughout the world and presenting a look to a client that hasn’t been customised is risky. Thanks for your thoughtful comments as usual. Best wishes, John.

i loved this interview, i think you John and Andrew both have a perfect life. you both do what you like, you have fun, and you earn money with it. now i’m starting to work with Adobe After Effects and i think that it is the best program ever created. The Adobe Company gives creative people to make money with their products, what i say is that spendin money with their products it’s a good investyment. You can make and edit video and movies with adobe premiere and adobe after effects, you can make and edit photos with adobe photoshop and adobe illustrator, you can make and edit audio with adobe soundbooth and adobe audition, and you can publish all this in your own website with adobe fireworks and adobe dreamweaver. So i love Adobe. Keep the good work John and Andrew (John with “motionworks” and Andre with “video copilot”).

    Hi John,
I see that you recommended FXPHD. How would you characterize their training to be different than Lynda.com or Total Training? Does it go a lot more in depth?

    • John Dickinson
      Reply

Hi Steve, All have their place but FXPHD is more in-depth and more specific to visual fx in general. Lynda and TT give you great training in what buttons to press… FXPHD also tells you why you would press those buttons… Best wishes, John.

    John,
I have been in the arts my entire life and thus have been exposed to a lot of varied art communities but all and all this community of VFX and motion graphics is the most creative. How nice to find a community where artist/designers actually help each other globally by sharing knowledge and experience. You guys are the best! Thanks for making this industry evolve as fluidly as it has. Good on you mates!

You know what’s amazing? I started with AE in Feb of 2010. The first thing on the web I encountered was VidCopilot. That’s where I learned the basics+. Ever since, I started discovering all the other guys (such as yourself John) doing the same thing. I’ve watched SO many tutorials and bought projects from Andrew, Tim Clapham, FXPHD, Red Giant, etc. And now, after all this I stumble on this interview you did with Andrew (and I also found the one with Nick Campbell). I’m surprised because I long ago scoured the web for info. You’d think I’d have found it all by now :)
Just wanted to let you know John how much I appreciate you taking the time out of your personal life to keep in touch with us out here; and see, even an old interview has a ton of life left in it!
