Video Copilot Element 3D has come in extremely handy over the past few weeks for some quick packshots and full frame supers. All of these are text-based looks and I’m yet to play with the in-depth particle settings, but so far am impressed with Element 3D.
While Element 3D isn’t as fully featured for 3D text creation as dedicated 3D applications such as Cinema 4D or plug-ins such as 3D Invigorator and ProAnimator, it’s fast, easy to use and didn’t crash once which is quite amazing for a 1.0 release.
For Act Of Valour I used Zaxwerks ProAnimator to animate the letters at the start.
The Guns, Girls & Gambling logo is a custom design, created in Illustrator and imported as paths into After Effects for use with Element 3D. The particle hits and smoke are from Action Essentials 2.
For Street Dance 2, Trapcode MIR was used to create the evolving background shapes.
Check out a breakdown of the Time Travellers look here.
The sparks were created using Trapcode Particular.

Great work, John. After a $1,400 outlay for a completely new rig I have just bought the motion design bundle and I’m looking forward to learning how to get the most out of it.

I’m actually really interested in that “Time Travellers” title. Is that a real project? Why 2 L’s? I want to see it if it is.
July 31, 2012 at 7:47 pm |
It was a graphic I created for an on-demand movie feature. I designed the title in Illustrator and imported it into AE as masks to use with Element. Travellers is spelled with two l’s. Best, John.

John, I’d assume VisualAdvocate is American. Traveller is (acceptably/commonly spelled) traveler here. But because “The King’s English” has been around for a lot longer, I say we go with you.
I ran into the same thing (different word which I can’t remember right now) on the Digital Juice web site some time ago and looked up the word to find that both spelling were correct.
I really appreciate your work! I also like all the C4D stuff too.

Great work John.. I love your compositing skills.. Definitely something I’ve been working on improving myself..

Thanks Travis, I really love compositing and wish I had more opportunity to do it! Best, John.

Very impresive Test, man!, and I like you talk about other product like 3D element from Video Copilot.

Thanks Luis.

Very nice examples, John. I am looking forward to trying Element out myself.
John, please correct me if I am wrong , but it seems like when 3D titling programs apply bump maps, they really only simulate surface depth with shadows as opposed to actually eroding the plane of the model. Am i mistaken?
August 1, 2012 at 9:12 am |
Hi John, thanks and yes, bump mapping doesn’t modify the actual geometry of the model. Check out this Wikipedia definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_mapping Best, John.

Hey John,
Awesome work. Quick question. The set you used for the “Time Traveller” piece, is it a still photo that you manipulated using the 2.5D technique? It’s sweet! I’m always floored at the quality people can pull off with that technique.
Best,
Rob

Thanks Rob, it’s a still image. I’ll be posting a stills breakdown of how I comped that shot so visit back soon. Best, John.

Okay well that’s a good reason to use 2 L’s then. It being spelled that way and all. I’m not even embarresed for thinking that had some kind meaning. Nope nothing like that happening here.Anyway I really do like that title a lot and I think it speaks to how well done it is that it makes me want to see the movie it’s for. Anyway keep up the good work! I’m excited to see what else you can do with Element 3D.

Nice. By any chance will you be going over the AtomKraft plugin when it comes out next month? I have a feeling there won’t be many tutorials on it for some reason.
August 1, 2012 at 9:15 am |
Hey John, I’m on the beta but haven’t had time to look at it! Best, John.
August 1, 2012 at 2:42 pm |
how does it go with transparency and reflections?
August 1, 2012 at 2:56 pm |
No ray tracing or refraction but does a good job of faking reflections through the use of Environment images.
August 1, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
Darn. I like the look of the built in CS6 ray tracing but my imac can’t really handle it, so AtomKraft might be worth looking into.

John,
This is a nice display of Element 3D put to use for titles. I’m not sure if this has been spotted or mentioned yet, but it seems like there is a layer edge visible in the Raven piece on the right side. It wipes off towards the end as the spotlight comes into frame. Just a heads up.
How much time do you usually spend on an animation like this?
Keep up the good work!
Cheers.
Phil

Thanks Phil, I generally get between 1 and 2 days to design a packshot and prepare full frame supers.
Best wishes, John.

Thanks Eliu I’m glad you like it!
Best, John.

Hi John
I want to buy “Boris box set” but its hard to find any video where I can see what exactly I can do with it?
As I am a newbie in motion graphics, How do I know to use them? Is there any attached tutorial through download version?
lastly, How can we get the motion work’s code to get discount on the mentioned products above?
Cheers
