    Neat but from what I have seen on AE Tuts + , you can do this with FreeForm Pro + ShapeShifter AE right in After Effects.

    Wow – another great piece, the compositing is just beautiful. Very well explained – thanks JD.
    One Question: Why did you use the lumas shader inside the bump channel? I mean it looks good, but if you think about it makes no sense to setup a reflection to “bump” something. I never would have tried that…

      Hey illd,
      Thanks and sorry for the confusion… that wasn’t a lumas effect in the Bump channel, it was the circular brushed metal layer from Photoshop I had named “Lumas”.

    Hi John,
    Love the texture tips. Since the shield is a simple circular shape, I would have probably just extruded a circle spline right in C4D instead of crossing back and forth to Illustrator. Saving steps, saves time and time is money.

      Hey Brett, I didn’t go back to Illustrator once I had made the splines and I also find it faster for me to create accurate splines in Illustrator. Best wishes, John.

    A masterful demonstration of one of the strengths of 3D: texturing. And in the end with a simple and spartan camera movement, the record is outstanding (especially for the trailer for Chris Evans). And the presentation of the preparation of texture in Photoshop, step by step, is brilliant as always and as its author. Long live the 3D! with C4D!

    Hi John

    at about 24 mins into the video you talk about how you used a photo filter to add warmth to the image. What is the advantage of using this filter over using a levels adjustment layer? Cheers! looks awesome, thank you for posting

      Hi Ashcat, Levels would be fine too, but I sometimes use the Photo Filter as a drag and drop correction option.

    I think the reason you are perceiving the reflection pass to be “brighter” is that you are adding it on top of the RGBa pass that already had it baked in.

      That’s what I thought too, it was weird though that the pass had a more intense reflection than the one that was baked with the RGBA pass..

    Great one john,nice style ..
    I guess that the displacement texture did not work because displacement works only on the polygonal objects, it doesn’t work on the the primitives (cube, sphere,….) and nurbs objects , so you have to convert your shield (which was originally created by nurbs ) to an editable poly , and your displacement should work just fine .

    Great tutorial as usual and you probably won’t see this as it’s a very late reply…

    I would have started the shield using a disc object, turned editable and scale the rings as you needed in points mode. Then you can select the ring faces and extrude which would give you a much cleaner mesh. Also, once you have your shield and applied the overall texture use a ‘stick texture’ tag before you apply the spherify. I find this tag really useful.

    Awesome tutorial. Well thought out, well presented. One question though – Spherify. Am I right in thinking that that function doesn’t appear in C4D Lite?

      Thanks Rob and yes that’s correct, Cinema 4D Lite doesn’t include Spherify.

    Great tutorial. I especially liked the texturing portion, with the scratches and such. Now it’s time to nit-pick. . . Since Captain America’s shield is made from Adamantium, which is a 100% indestructible material, wouldn’t it be impossible for it to have scratches and/or dents?
